The relationship between trauma and indigenous people living with a disability

Presented by: Wendall Nicholas

Workshop description:

Living with a disability deeply affects indigenous people and their families. They commonly face three complex key life challenges:

A. Trauma - Internal/Lateral
B. Grief - Distinct/Familial/Communal
C. Isolation - Physical/Attitudinal

The path to interdependence for indigenous people with disabilities session uses safe and effective intervention methods of working with people with disabilities and their families who experience complex trauma. The three-day training program emphasizes both knowledge and application through experiential instruction and therapy. Indigenous treatment modalities are woven throughout the interventions, including experiential exercises, story-telling, traditional medicine, ceremonial processes and land-based healing techniques.

Learning objective: The participant will gain increased knowledge, confidence, skills, and awareness on ways to effectively intervene with indigenous people with disabilities that experience personal trauma.
